What a permanent residence permit is
A permanent residence permit is granted for an indefinite period. The permanent residence card is valid for 10 years — after that you exchange it for a new one. It allows you to work in Poland without a work permit and to enjoy most rights on an equal footing with Polish citizens.
The most common grounds — details
- Polish origin — once the origin is documented, e.g. with civil status records and documents of your ancestors.
- Karta Polaka — for holders who intend to settle in Poland permanently.
- Marriage to a Polish citizen — as a rule after at least 3 years of marriage and 2 years of uninterrupted residence in Poland on the basis of a temporary residence permit granted in connection with that marriage.
- Child of a Polish citizen — a minor child under their parental authority.
Official fees
- Stamp duty (opłata skarbowa) for a permanent residence permit — 640 zł. Holders of the Karta Polaka are exempt from it.
- Fee for issuing the residence card — 100 zł.
Permanent residence or EU long-term resident?
If you have no Polish origin, no Karta Polaka and no marriage to a Polish citizen, check the conditions for the EU long-term resident permit — after 5 years of legal residence it gives similar stability.

Frequently asked questions
Can I work without a permit with a permanent residence card?
Yes. The holder of a permanent residence permit can work in Poland without a work permit and without an employer's declaration.
How long is a permanent residence card issued for?
The permit itself is indefinite, while the residence card is valid for 10 years. Before that period expires, you must apply to exchange the card.
Does a Karta Polaka holder pay stamp duty?
No. Holders of the Karta Polaka are exempt from stamp duty for a permanent residence permit. You pay only for the issue of the residence card.
How long do the proceedings take?
The time depends on the grounds and the office. In the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, residence proceedings usually take many months, which is why a complete application from the start is particularly important here.
