A1 certificate + EKUZ (EHIC) for entrepreneurs (JDG)
We help entrepreneurs running a sole proprietorship (jednoosobowa działalność gospodarcza, JDG) obtain an A1 certificate and a European Health Insurance Card (EKUZ).
Leave a requestWith properly prepared documentation, you can confirm which social security system you are covered by while doing business abroad, and use the healthcare you are entitled to.
What is the A1 certificate?
The A1 certificate (zaświadczenie A1) is a document issued by ZUS confirming that an entrepreneur working abroad is covered by the Polish social security system.
When may it be needed?
- You run a registered business in Poland (JDG).
- You carry out orders or provide services abroad on your own.
- You travel temporarily to another country to carry out a contract.
- You regularly do business in two or more countries.
Why is it worth having an A1?
The certificate confirms the applicable social security system and helps demonstrate that, during the period covered by the document, the entrepreneur is subject to Polish social insurance legislation.
When similar activity is carried out temporarily abroad, the possibility of remaining in the Polish insurance system depends on meeting certain conditions. As a rule, the period of such activity should not exceed 24 months.
A1 and EKUZ (EHIC)
Along with the A1, it is worth getting a European Health Insurance Card (EKUZ), which lets you use the healthcare you are entitled to while staying in another country. We help entrepreneurs prepare the documentation and obtain both documents.
How to obtain an A1 certificate
- We check the conditions — including whether the business was run in Poland before going abroad (as a rule, for at least 2 months) and whether the work abroad is similar to that in Poland.
- We prepare the application to ZUS together with documents confirming the business and the contract abroad.
- We respond to any questions and requests (wezwania) from ZUS.
- You receive an A1 certificate for the period of your business activity abroad.
What documents may be needed
- An entry in CEIDG and confirmation that the business is run in Poland.
- A contract or order from the foreign client.
- Information on the place and period of work abroad.
- Confirmation of payment of social security contributions.
EKUZ (EHIC) — how to obtain it
The European Health Insurance Card is issued by the NFZ (National Health Fund) to people covered by health insurance in Poland. We help you submit the application so that the card is ready before you leave.

Frequently asked questions
Is the A1 certificate mandatory?
Formally not always, but without it the foreign client or institution may demand that contributions be paid in its country. The A1 confirms that you are covered by the Polish social security system and protects you against double contributions.
For how long is the A1 certificate issued?
For the period of business activity abroad stated in the application — for temporary work in another country, as a rule no longer than 24 months.
How long do you wait for the A1 certificate?
It depends on the entrepreneur's situation and the completeness of the documents. In practice, ZUS issues the certificate within anywhere from 1 day to about 2 months.
In which countries is the A1 recognised?
In the countries of the European Union, the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and in Switzerland.
Does the EKUZ (EHIC) replace private travel insurance?
Not fully. The EKUZ gives access to public healthcare on the terms applicable in the given country, but it does not cover, for example, the cost of medical transport back to Poland. It is worth considering an additional policy.
